Paradigm shifting bring the pulsating growth,
machinery industry delighted harvesting

Pass on knowledge by written and permanent learning, forge ahead of machine industry's perpetually development.........by Shu-ling Hsu

In the new year of 2004, a cyclic year of the monkey, we have the pleasure to cover the chairman of the Taiwan Machinery Industry Association, Mr. Fred B. C. Huang. Mr. Huang sincerely hopes that every member is not only ever changing, just like a monkey, but also has versatile capabilities to meet current trends. During a 'paradigm shifting' period, each one should transform crises into opportunities.

Mr. Huang indicates that Taiwan's recent economical environment faces a big transformation period every 10 years called a 'paradigm shift'. It means that during continuous change, a skip change will occur. In this monkey year, every manufacturer should develop nimble characteristics, just like the monkey, to turn change into good opportunities.

In 2003, the Taiwanese machinery industry's achievement was superior compared with general economic results. Predicting for 2004, the industry is expected to keep growing as usual. However in 2005, the growth may slow down.

Mr. Huang also mentioned in regret: "In industrial development, contacts among the government, machine users and machine suppliers are not sufficient. Therefore, the self-production percentage for locally made equipment was estimated to be under 10%. The only way for the development of locally made equipment requires the involvement of 'government instructions' and the machine users."

According to Mr. Huang, Taiwan's machinery industry is one of the few industries that has a complete 'smile' curve and full profits. By comparison, the profit for the traditional, information technology and electronics industries is small. Because the Taiwanese machinery industry has outstanding manufacturing capabilities, some manufacturers receive ODM or OEM orders from Japan and Germany. This proves that Taiwan products are fully recognized by worldwide markets.

Mr. Huang also emphasized: "Today each manufacturer is facing the crisis of a fast loss of domestic customers, therefore everyone should spend more effort in developing overseas markets. Basically, the Taiwan machinery industry has concentrated market development in some newly developed areas such as: India, Central Asia, Central Europe and Eastern Europe. Taiwan has a competitive edge, excellent quality and reasonable prices for equipment to produce everyday goods and industrial products, such as: food processing machines, packaging machines, woodworking machines, textile machines, plastic and rubber machines and machine tools for producing automotive and motorcyle parts, etc."

Facing the ever-moving China, the Taiwanese machinery industry should make 'comprehensive planning' for future development strategies. Each manufacturer needs to move faster than China. Both sides should compete peacefully and keep growing together. However, never 'put all one's eggs in one basket'.

Mr. Huang also emphasized: "While the machinery industry is performing R&D, it is necessary to make a proper 'documented experience inheriting'. Then, thoroughly follow with 'lifetime learning' proposed by the master of management, Peter M. Senge. With the documented experience inheriting and lifetime learning, creating perpetual growth for the Taiwanese machinery industry is a goal.
